My heart jumped into my mouth. I read on.

The words, black water leapt, off the page.

Johannes’ scribbles swam before my eyes. Not only was I very tired but I couldn’t focus, my mind was in such turmoil. I read on carefully.

He had not written whole sentences, merely a word or phrases here and there, to aid his memory, I suppose.

‘Headaches, confusion, severe voiding of the bowels, and drowsiness. Poisoning develops, convulsions..Poisoning becomes acute, symptoms - voiding of the bowels, vomiting, blood in the urine, cramping muscles, stomach pain, more convulsions. Small doses, feigns food poisoning. Large dose? Tasteless, odourless, lethal. Final result of this - death.’

Johannes had then written a few names of plants or rare substances I suppose, for I did not know any of them. He wrote in a quick untidy scribble; if caught early enough, it was thought these could counteract the effect of the poison.

There was an unfamiliar word which he’d written three times at the bottom of the passage.

Sandaraca.

Sandaraca.

Sandaraca.

and then,

Arsenic.

Orpiment.

I stared at it. What on earth was that? At the very bottom of the page he had scribbled some names.

William

Cecily

Colmar

Quimper

Robert

Geoffrey

Cecily

I frowned. Then I took a step to the fire, searched for a piece of charcoal and added shakily, Piers?
